Why is my garage door opening on its own?

Garage doors can open and close with the touch of a button. But if your garage door is opening and you’re not pressing any buttons, you’ll definitely want to figure out what’s causing it. There are a couple of things that can cause your garage door to open on its own, so read on to learn why it's happening and what you can do to stop it.

Loose Remotes Around the House

Oftentimes, garage door remotes wind up in junk drawers or the center console on your vehicle, piled under things. When you close the drawer or console, it can trigger the remote and cause your garage door to open unexpectedly.

Look for any loose remotes and gather them so they’re not getting pressed and opening your garage door.

Programming Error

Garage door remotes run on a code that is paired with your garage door opener. If you were attempting to program anything such as a remote or keypad and your neighbor pressed his garage door remote, then it’s possible that his remote paired with your opener and now he has control of your garage door.

To remove your neighbor’s control of your garage door opener, erase the memory of your opener. Read here to learn how to erase the memory of your opener and reprogram your remotes.
